Wine bottles, as we've noted before are made from extremely durable glass, which is why if you ever tour around old homes in Europe, you'll find families holding onto piles of dusty relics dating back a hundred years or more. While there's probably not a way to use every single wine bottle we're likely to consume over our lifetime, we can certainly make a good dent on giving them a second life.

  • Water Carafes: One of our favorite re-uses, hands down, is to keep three chilled bottles in the fridge at any given time, which is not only a treat on a hot day, it's a great way to avoid wasting tap water while you wait for it to achieve the desired temperature.
  • Infused Oils: Check out this article for instructions on how to infuse your own oil, which you can store in your lovely, clean bottles. Half bottles are particularly good for this one.
  • Kombucha: Another MIY treat, check out this article for the deets on Kombucha with a link on making your own tasty cure-all beverage.
  • Soap Dispenser: With or without a bartender's pour spout on the opening, you can make a pretty dish soap dispenser with a clear bottle and colored liquid.
  • Flower Vases: Line up several wine bottles, and insert a long stemmed flower in each, such as a gerbera daisy, sunflower or birds of paradise. These are lovely in a window sill. You can also cut the top off straight or at an angle for extreme elegance.
  • Tumblers: The next few ideas involve going to a glass cutter, which we realize may stretch beyond your DIY comfort level, but for the uber dedicated, take eight wine bottles to a glass cutter, have them cut at your preferred height and take them home and sand them to remove any scary edges. If you're a real DIY-er, check out this post from Instructables to learn how to cut your own, and always take proper precautions when cutting glass (gloves, goggles, you know the drill.)
  • Candle Votives: Same as above, only shorter
  • Night Light: Drill a hole in the lower back of the bottle large enough to insert a small string of LED Christmas lights. Slide your lights in, put the cork or cap back on and voila, instant night light.
