(But get mom's permission first before you smuggle things away, natch!) Mom's, oh I don't know, just have more stuff. Stuff they probably don't need, want or use anymore and might really appreciate having you take it off their overburdened hands. (Savvy tip: Grandmoms have even more stuff.) Here are seven things we've successfully scored, again, with mom's permish, so don't hesitate to go prowling around her archives for these hot items after a brief little dialogue to make sure it's ok with her.

  1. Scarves. Long scarves can be turned into sexy infinity scarves and square scarves can be tied and worn in a million new ways.
  2. Beauty Minis. Mom has more money to spend on beauty than I do, so she's always scooping up free samples that she never uses. Grab those luxe mini mascaras, perfumes, creams and makeup remover hiding under the sink.
  3. Jewelry. Mom has pared back her taste a little in the bling department over the past few years and it's rare she'll wear more than a pair of earrings on the fly. That leaves jewelry box after jewelry box filled with bangles, pendants and brooches (for your brooch pendant necklaces), ripe for the plucking.
  4. Bags. Mom may not have all the occasions to sport those cute 70s-era leather clutches, hobos, and other purses she's got lying around and she just might not mind if you take one off her hands.
  5. Belts. You might not be the same clothing size, but cool belts, particularly wide belts or wrap belts are a savvy score.
  6. Books. Art books, photo books, any kind of book can be used for cards, wall art, wrapping paper, or just inspiration. Scoop them up if mom doesn't want them any more.
  7. Ties. Let's not let Dad off scott free, now! We love wearing ties as belts, as ties and/or making tie necklaces out of the lot.
