Winter weather, whether it be snow, slush, rain, sleet, hail or the salt we use to clean up the mess can give your shoes a brutal beating and a real run for your money if you're unprepared.

Perhaps you got caught in a Snowpocalypse in your favorite 2-buckled calf-skins--if you're thinking of hauling them in for costly maintenance,  give these fool-proof sole-saving tips a go first, from Donna Williams, Seasonal Boots Buyer at DSW:

How to Remove Salt Stains

  • Mix two parts water to one part white vinegar and use a sturdy paper towel (to avoid pilling) and rub the solution on to a small section of the affected area.
  • Once the area appears clean, immediately use a soft, dry cloth to buff the area.
  • Repeat until the entire boot is clean, focusing on small sections of the stained area at a time.
  • Allow boot to air dry for about 30 minutes. After that, any missed salt stains should become visible and you can repeat as necessary.

How to Prevent Salt Stains

  • Polishing your boots with a soft cloth frequently throughout the winter will help protect your boots from everyday salt damage (this is a great chance to make use of those old towels you were thinking of throwing out)

How to Properly Dry Wet Shoes

  • If your shoes get waterlogged, stuff them with paper towels or an absorbent cloth to maintain shape.
  • Let shoes air-dry, but keep them away from any heat sources
  • Do not polish wet shoes
