Making your own shimmer lotion for getting that dewy, apres-ski winter glow is a simple one-two punch, using products you may already have on hand.  It's also a good case study for hanging onto those products you've grown tired of, but haven't had the courage to chuck...it just takes a little creativity to breath new life into them. Take a good look in your bottom drawer, or wherever you're harboring half-used supplies, and see if you might have partial "empties" at the ready you can put to good use.

Easy Homemade Shimmer Lotion

  1. Take an empty travel size lotion bottle or clean out a previously used one.
  2. Fill it with your favorite lotion, leaving a little space at the top.
  3. Add finely milled highlighting powder*, pinch by pinch (you can use the tip of a butter knife, like you're Vermeer making powders in the 'Girl With the Pearl Earring' movie) until you reach the right amount of shim-sham. (Savvy tip: a little goes a loooooong way).
  4. Shake, shake, shake it up until your shimmer has been evenly distributed.

*You can use any budget-friendly loose highlighting or shimmer powder at the drug store or you can scrape powder from an inexpensive eye shadow.  Look for warm, golden hues (rather than cool tones like silver) to add glow to ashen winter skin.

Now you've got your shimmer lotion, where the heck do you put it?

  • On the collarbone area to create definition
  • On decolletage for va-va-va-voom
  • On bare shoulders for general loveliness
  • On bare legs to avoid ashen, scary-winter leg syndrome
  • On cheekbones to make them look more defined
